I've always assumed that smallies eat creek chubs, but I'm basing that assumption on just my own observations that the two species often share the same water (at least where I fish in Michigan), the chubs tend to be smaller and dumber than the bass, and bass will generally eat whatever they can catch. I guess it was because I didn't much care what kind of fish I was catching so long as I caught them. I use a minnow trap like the one below.
