But we can identify with the disciples in this sense: there are things yet future for us, which are declared in Scripture, but which we do not fully understand. Once we realized it was all a part of a ploy so that we would be delayed and our friends could surprise us, we understood everything. But Jesus' promise extended beyond that. For generations people have had the idea that the Holy Spirit is an apparition, something like Casper the Friendly Ghost, the 1950s and 60s comic book and cartoon character! 2 For if the message spoken through angels proved to be so firm that every violation or disobedience received its just penalty, 3 how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? At this same period of time, the unbelievers (the world) who have crucified Jesus will rejoice over His death. Are the men clumping together in little groups of various combinations as the confines of the way rearrange them again and again? I think that it is. And because we now see this clearly, we believe that You have truly come from God.. However, He does not allow their pretense to stand, unchallenged. In 16:5, Jesus seems to mildly rebuke His disciples for not asking Him any more questions about where He is going.
